Taxi cab driver found shot to death In the early morning hours of April 28, 2017, Ahsan Khan Ali, a 38-year-old male taxi driver of Pakistani origin, was killed in New Orleans. His death occurred just two days before a planned trip to his native Pakistan to visit his wife, his 5-year-old son, and an 8-month-old daughter he had yet to meet.
Ali, a driver for United Cabs, had picked up a fare in the French Quarter.
Later that morning, just before 8 a.m., his body was discovered along a remote stretch of Michoud Boulevard near Interstate-10 in New Orleans East. He had been shot to death. His taxi was found later that morning, partially burned, in the Desire neighborhood near Florida Avenue and Piety Street.
In connection with the killing, an Orleans Parish special grand jury indicted a man named Tyrone Jones on charges of second-degree murder, armed robbery with a firearm, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to obstruct justice in a homicide investigation. At the time of the indictment, the 25-year-old Jones was already in custody at the Allen Correctional Center, serving a five-year sentence for an unrelated conviction of being a felon in possession of a firearm. His bond for the charges related to Ali's death was set at $2 million. If convicted of the murder charge, Jones faces a mandatory life sentence.
Authorities have indicated that they believe other individuals were also involved in the robbery and murder of Ahsan Khan Ali. The investigation into the full scope of the crime and the identification of any other potential suspects remains ongoing.
