On a late autumn morning in Landover, Maryland, the life of 37-year-old Kevin Hardy, a male resident of Palmer Park, was tragically cut short. On November 30, 2006, Hardy was seated in his car when he was fatally shot. The incident, which unfolded around 7:20 a.m. on Greenleaf Road, ended with Hardy’s silver sedan crashing into a parked vehicle as he attempted to drive away after being wounded.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The events leading to the shooting began when a man on a bicycle approached Hardy's car. An argument erupted between the two, with an eyewitness reportedly hearing Hardy say, "I'm not scared of you or your gun." Shortly after this exchange, the man on the bicycle, identified as 23-year-old Herbert Roosevelt Sidbury, pulled out a handgun and fired at Hardy. After the initial shot, and as a witness ran for cover, Sidbury fired a second time before fleeing the scene on his bicycle.
Later that same day, Prince George's County police arrested Sidbury near his home on Greenleaf Road. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and the use of a handgun in the commission of a felony. The investigation suggested that the fatal encounter stemmed from a dispute between the two men.
In July 2007, a Prince George's County jury found Herbert Sidbury guilty of the first-degree murder of Kevin Hardy. An eyewitness who had known Sidbury for years provided key testimony during the trial. On October 19, 2007, Sidbury was sentenced to life in prison for the murder. His conviction was later upheld after an appeal.
