In the midst of a domestic dispute that evening, Evelyn's son, 27-year-old Christopher Wayne Gary, opened fire. He shot his mother multiple times in the kitchen of her home, inflicting fatal wounds. The rampage did not end there. Gary then went outside and fired several shots at his stepfather, who managed to escape unharmed. Continuing his violent outburst, Gary then turned his attention to a neighbor across the street, shooting and injuring the 49-year-old man in the shoulder.
