In the summer of 2010, a horrific crime unfolded in Lanham, Maryland, claiming the lives of four people, including 38-year-old Dawn Yvette Brooks. On August 6th, Brooks, her two young children, 4-year-old Shakur Sylvester Sikyala and 3-year-old Shayla Shante Sikyala, and their paternal aunt, 41-year-old Mwasiti Sikyala, were found shot to death. The female victim's life was cut short in what police would later describe as an execution-style shooting.
The discovery was made in a second-floor apartment of a detached garage where the victims were living in deplorable conditions, without running water or toilets and amidst tons of trash. Police were initially called to the residence on the 6800 block of Third Street for a report of an assault, only to uncover the quadruple homicide.
The investigation quickly pointed to a dispute over drugs as the motive. Within a day, authorities arrested two individuals from Texas: 43-year-old Darrell Lynn Bellard and 18-year-old Tkeisha Nicole Gilmer. They were charged with first-degree murder. Investigators determined that Bellard and Gilmer had traveled to Maryland in connection with the sale of marijuana. Prosecutors stated that Bellard killed the victims because he believed Brooks and Mwasiti Sikyala were responsible for the disappearance of a significant quantity of marijuana he had brought from Texas to sell.
During the legal proceedings, Tkeisha Gilmer pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder in November 2011. As part of her plea agreement, she testified against her co-defendant, Darrell Bellard. Gilmer revealed that she stood guard at the door while Bellard carried out the shootings.
In April 2014, a Prince George's County jury found Darrell Lynn Bellard guilty on four counts of first-degree murder for the slayings. Subsequently, in June 2014, he was sentenced to multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 80 years in prison, ensuring he would spend the rest of his life behind bars for the brutal murders of Dawn Yvette Brooks and her family.
