In the autumn of 2011, the life of Maricus Kyle Perkins, a 20-year-old Black/African American man from Baltimore, Maryland, was tragically cut short. On the afternoon of October 3rd, Perkins was the victim of a fatal shooting that occurred during an attempted armed robbery in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Maryland. He was transported to the University of Maryland Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the death of Maricus Perkins led authorities to
a suspect named Raymond Kelly. The state's case against Kelly was built on the premise that he was the individual who shot Perkins in the course of an attempted robbery. Eyewitness testimony presented during the subsequent legal proceedings played a crucial role in the prosecution's narrative of the events that transpired on that fatal day. The defense, in turn, argued a case of mistaken identity, presenting no witnesses of their own.
Following a trial in the Circuit Court for Baltimore City, a jury convicted Raymond Kelly of second-degree murder and attempted robbery in connection with the death of Maricus Kyle Perkins. As a result of the conviction, the court imposed a sentence of 30 years of imprisonment for the murder charge, to be served concurrently with a 13-year sentence for the attempted robbery charge. This brought a legal conclusion to the violent act that ended a young man's life.
