In the early hours of a Sunday morning in November 2011, a dispute over a stolen coat escalated into a fatal act of violence, claiming the life of 20-year-old Charles Raphael Hunter in Prince George's County, Maryland. The incident, which unfolded outside an apartment complex in Temple Hills, cut short the life of a young man described by loved ones as funny, kind, and goofy.
The conflict began around 2 a.m. on November 13, 2011, in the 3100 block of Good Hope Avenue.
Hunter, in the company of several friends, confronted another group of individuals regarding a missing coat. The argument grew heated, attracting the attention of a security guard at the complex who intervened and escorted Hunter and his friends off the property. However, the attempt to de-escalate the situation proved tragically futile. Moments later, the sound of gunshots pierced the night. A man was seen firing into the group that included Hunter.
Charles Raphael Hunter was struck by a bullet in the chest and was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts to save him, his injury proved to be fatal, and he succumbed to the gunshot wound. His death marked the 85th criminal homicide investigated by the Prince George's County Police Department that year.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the investigation swiftly led to a suspect. Based on the accounts of three witnesses, police identified 22-year-old Daniel Andrew Gardner as the gunman. Gardner was apprehended shortly after the incident. He was subsequently charged with first and second-degree murder for his alleged role in the death of Charles Raphael Hunter and was held without bond.
