On a spring evening in Baltimore, on March 24, 2015, the life of 29-year-old Jarrell Hicks, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short. Hicks, who was also known by the nickname "Tookie," was found shot in the 3300 block of West Caton Avenue. The incident marked another grim statistic in the city's homicide count for the year.
More than a year and a half later, in December 2016, a significant development in the case emerged with the arrest of 18-year-old Dennis Diggs of
York, Pennsylvania. The Baltimore Police Department announced that Diggs was being charged with the murder of Jarrell Hicks. This breakthrough in the investigation offered a glimmer of hope for justice for Hicks and his grieving family. The charges against Diggs were not limited to this single act of violence; he was also implicated in two other Baltimore homicides that occurred in October 2016.
The legal process unfolded, and Dennis Diggs was brought to trial for the murder of Jarrell Hicks. In January 2018, after the presentation of evidence and deliberation, a jury rendered its verdict. Dennis Diggs was found not guilty of the murder of Jarrell Hicks. In the days surrounding this acquittal, prosecutors also dropped the charges against Diggs in one of the other murder cases, and a jury cleared him in the third. After spending approximately 15 months in jail, Dennis Diggs was set free. The case of Jarrell Hicks's death was officially closed, leaving his family and community with a verdict but perhaps not the closure they had sought.
