On a summer evening in Baltimore, Maryland, a 26-year-old man of Southwest Asian descent named Jaswinder Singh was working, delivering food in the 4800 block of Alhambra Avenue. It was July 26, 2015, and this delivery would tragically be his last. While on the job, Singh was shot and killed in what authorities described as a robbery attempt. The assailants had targeted him for his money as he arrived with a pizza delivery.
The community was left in shock by the senseless act of violence
against a hardworking individual trying to make a life for himself in the United States. The Baltimore police quickly launched an investigation. A description of the suspect's vehicle was circulated among patrol officers, which led to a swift apprehension. Twenty-one-year-old Marlo Lomax was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting.
Lomax faced a litany of charges, including the murder of Jaswinder Singh. The prosecution also brought charges against him for another robbery that occurred on the same day and a non-fatal shooting that had taken place just five days prior. Despite the evidence presented against him, a jury acquitted Lomax of all charges related to Singh's murder in a trial that concluded in June 2019. Although he was not convicted for the death of Jaswinder Singh, Lomax was found guilty of attempted murder, conspiracy to murder, and other related charges in connection with the separate non-fatal shooting. The outcome of the trial left the family of Jaswinder Singh without a sense of closure.
