In the late hours of a summer night in Salisbury, Maryland, a gathering of young people at an Americas Best Value Inn took a tragic turn, ending the life of 17-year-old Rakim Russell. On August 2, 2015, Russell, a resident of Fruitland and an upcoming senior at Wicomico High School, was leaving a party at the hotel just after midnight when gunfire erupted in the parking lot.
He was struck by a bullet and rushed to Peninsula Regional Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to an earlier conflict at the party. Authorities determined that an altercation had occurred involving several individuals who then left the premises. These individuals, identified as 20-year-old Larry Allen Lamar Ennis of Salisbury, and 18-year-olds Ky'Shir Tariq Connally and Jarrett Vaughn Stokes, both of Delmar, later returned to the hotel. It was alleged that Stokes, seated in the passenger side of a white Chevrolet Impala, fired a semi-automatic handgun approximately four times into the crowd of people in the parking lot, with one of the bullets fatally striking Russell. Another bullet entered an occupied hotel room, narrowly missing a man lying in bed.
Within days, all three suspects were apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Capitol Area Region Fugitive Task Force. Stokes and Connally were arrested in the Delmar area, while Ennis was taken into custody in Dover, Delaware, and subsequently extradited. All three were charged with first- and second-degree murder and other related offenses. The subsequent legal proceedings revealed further details of the night's events, including testimony from the driver of the vehicle who confirmed Stokes as the shooter in exchange for a plea deal.
The trials resulted in convictions for the men involved in Rakim Russell's death. Larry Ennis was found guilty of first-degree murder, and Jarrett Stokes, the shooter, was also convicted of first-degree murder. Stokes was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 23 years for handgun use in a felony and reckless endangerment. Ennis also received a life sentence. Ky'Shir Connally was found guilty of second-degree murder. The tragic and senseless act of violence cut short a young life and resulted in lengthy prison sentences for the three young men responsible.
