Edwin Rivera, an 18-year-old Hispanic male, died on February 10, 2016, days after being shot in a violent incident inside a Baltimore bar. The shooting occurred on February 6, 2016, at the Santa Clara bar located at 500 S. Bond St. in the Fells Point neighborhood. Rivera was one of three victims in the shooting.
Following the incident, an investigation led to the arrest of three suspects: Nehemias Batista, Argueta Andres, and Melvin Zavala.
The case against Batista proceeded to trial, where a jury found him guilty of the first-degree murder of Edwin Rivera. In addition to the murder conviction, Batista was also found guilty of the attempted first-degree murder of a second victim, Mario Vasquez, and the first-degree assault of a third individual, Oscar Guerrero.
For the murder of Edwin Rivera and the attempted murder of Mario Vasquez, Nehemias Batista was sentenced to life in prison. He also received a 15-year sentence for the assault of Oscar Guerrero and a 10-year sentence for the second-degree assault of Erma Merivia. The court ordered all sentences to run concurrently.
