In the quiet town of Pocomoke City, Maryland, a distressing scene unfolded on September 12, 2016, culminating in the tragic death of 78-year-old Black / African American male, Marvin Purnell Sr. The events of that day were set in motion when a concerned friend of Purnell's daughter, Karen, contacted the Worcester County Sheriff's Office to request a welfare check at the family's residence on Groton Road, having not heard from her and noticing a disturbing odor emanating from the home.
Upon their arrival shortly after 10:30 a.m., deputies found the house secured with no signs of forced entry. As they attempted to make contact, they heard a man's voice from inside, later identified as Marvin Purnell Jr., age 46. Despite their requests for him to open the door, he refused. For about an hour, law enforcement continued their attempts to communicate with him via cellphone and a loudspeaker to no avail.
The situation escalated when deputies deployed a CS gas canister through a window in an effort to compel anyone inside to exit. This action, however, unintentionally ignited a fire within the residence. The Pocomoke Fire Department was dispatched to the scene to extinguish the blaze. It was after the fire was put out that the full scope of the tragedy was discovered.
Inside the home, authorities found the bodies of Marvin Purnell Sr. and his 53-year-old daughter, Karen E. Purnell. The body of Marvin Purnell Jr. was also located with a rifle beneath him. Subsequent investigation by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit determined that the incident was a double murder-suicide. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore concluded that Marvin Purnell Sr. died from two gunshot wounds to the face, and Karen Purnell died from a gunshot wound to the back of the head and multiple stab wounds. Their deaths were ruled homicides.
The investigation identified Marvin Purnell Jr. as the suspect in the deaths of his father and sister. The medical examiner determined that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the neck, and his death was ruled a suicide. While a motive for the devastating actions of Marvin Purnell Jr. was not immediately clear to investigators, the community was left to grapple with the shocking loss of a family described by neighbors as god-fearing people who were active in their church and community.
