In the fall of 2016, a tragic series of events that began in Jacksonville, Florida, with the death of a young mother culminated in the discovery of a man's body in a wooded area of Baltimore, Maryland. Norris Rashid Dail Sr., a 26-year-old Black male, was found on October 12, 2016, having died from what authorities determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. His death brought an end to a multi-state manhunt that had been initiated weeks earlier.
The search for Dail Sr.
began after his girlfriend, 26-year-old Cynthia Aviles, was found dead in her Southside apartment in Jacksonville on September 28, 2016. Investigators with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office quickly identified Dail Sr. as a person of interest in her death and issued a warrant for his arrest. Compounding the urgency of the situation, the couple's 4-year-old son was missing, leading to the issuance of an Amber Alert.
The young boy was located unharmed in Baltimore with family members not long after the alert was issued. Dail Sr., however, remained at large, prompting a nearly two-week search involving multiple law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Marshals. The nationwide manhunt concluded with the discovery of his body in the 1200 block of North Woodington Road in West Baltimore. Homicide detectives in Baltimore investigated the scene and concluded that Dail Sr. had taken his own life.
The news of Dail Sr.'s death was met with mixed emotions by the family of Cynthia Aviles.
