On October 3, 2017, Robert Breen, a 68-year-old White/Caucasian male, was found deceased in his Baltimore, Maryland, home on Summerfield Avenue. Authorities were dispatched to the residence after receiving a report of an unresponsive person. Upon their arrival, they discovered Mr. Breen had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his face and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the death quickly led police to identify a suspect, 45-year-old Joseph Masilek of New Windsor,
Maryland. Investigators determined that Breen and Masilek were known to each other and had been involved in a dispute prior to the fatal shooting. Evidence found at the scene included notes, later confirmed to have been written by Masilek, in which he expressed remorse for the incident.
Authorities launched a search for Masilek, believing he had fled the area in a gray 2002 Mercury Cougar. The manhunt came to a close on October 5, 2017, when Masilek's body was discovered in a wooded area in Severn, Maryland. His death was the result of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. With Masilek being the sole suspect in Robert Breen's murder, the case was closed following his death.
