In a tragic turn of events that began with a drug deal, 29-year-old Stanley B. Brunson, Jr., a male, was found deceased on April 9, 2018, in a Towson, Maryland apartment. His death, which was ruled a homicide, was the result of trauma to his upper body, which included multiple gunshot wounds and other significant injuries. Alongside him was another victim, 28-year-old Shameek Davone Joyner, who had also been fatally shot.
The grim discovery was made by a maintenance worker who entered the fifth-floor apartment on Lambourne Road.
Investigators quickly determined that the murders were targeted and not a random act of violence, believing that Brunson and Joyner had gone to the apartment to meet the suspects for a prearranged drug transaction. The investigation led police to two brothers, Norwood Thomas Johnson Jr., 29, and Myghee Nicholas Johnson, 21. The Johnson brothers were identified as the primary suspects in the double homicide.
Following a traffic stop on Interstate 83, both Norwood and Myghee Johnson were taken into custody. They were subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder. In connection with the case, a known associate of the Johnson brothers, 42-year-old Dwight Dakarai Jones, was also arrested on various drug and weapons violations, including drug trafficking, after a search of his home uncovered a significant amount of marijuana and multiple firearms. However, the weapons found at Jones' residence were not believed to have been used in the killings of Brunson and Joyner.
The legal proceedings that followed saw the Johnson brothers facing trial for the murders. While they were initially charged with first-degree murder, a jury ultimately found both Norwood and Nyghee Johnson guilty of two counts of second-degree murder. In March 2020, both brothers were sentenced to 40 years in prison for their roles in the deaths of Stanley Brunson Jr. and Shameek Joyner, bringing a close to the investigation and legal battle that ensued from the fatal drug deal.
