In a tragic turn of events stemming from a drug deal gone awry, 28-year-old Shameek Davone Joyner was found deceased in a Towson, Maryland apartment on the morning of April 9, 2018. A maintenance worker, entering a fifth-floor apartment on Lambourne Road, discovered the bodies of Joyner and another man, Stanley B. Brunson, Jr., aged 29. Both men had sustained fatal gunshot wounds to their upper bodies in what police described as a targeted attack.
The investigation into the double
homicide revealed that Joyner and Brunson had arranged to meet two brothers, Norwood Thomas Johnson Jr. and Nyghee Nicholas Johnson, at the apartment for a significant marijuana transaction. A resident of the apartment had reportedly facilitated the meeting. What was intended to be a drug deal escalated into violence, resulting in the shooting deaths of both Joyner and Brunson.
Following a police investigation, the Johnson brothers were identified as the primary suspects. They were apprehended during a traffic stop and subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder. During their investigation, police also arrested another individual, Dwight Dakarai Jones, on unrelated drug and weapons charges.
Norwood and Nyghee Johnson were later tried for the murders. A jury found both brothers guilty of two counts of second-degree murder. In March 2020, both Norwood Johnson, then 31, and Nyghee Johnson, then 23, were sentenced to 40 years in prison for their roles in the deaths of Shameek Joyner and Stanley Brunson.
