In the Kernewood neighborhood of North Baltimore, on November 10, 2018, the life of 25-year-old Darelle Yancey was tragically cut short. Yancey, a Black/African American male, was discovered with a fatal gunshot wound to the head in the 4600 block of York Road. His death was swiftly ruled a homicide by the Baltimore Police Department, who then began the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to this violent act.
The investigation into Yancey's murder took a significant turn
with the arrest of his own cousin, Neil Davis. Evidence that linked Davis to the crime surfaced from an unlikely source: a separate investigation into a school shooting at Frederick Douglass High School in which Davis was also implicated. This connection provided detectives with the breakthrough they needed. Court documents later revealed a deeply personal and troubling motive behind the killing. Davis allegedly targeted his cousin in retaliation, believing that Yancey had inappropriately touched his younger sister.
Neil Davis was subsequently charged with the first-degree murder of Darelle Yancey, in addition to other serious offenses. During his bail review, the court deemed him a threat to public safety and ordered him to be held without bail. The case brought to light Davis's troubled history, which included not only the school shooting but also a prior arrest in 2015 for the attempted murder of another cousin. The charges against Davis set the stage for a legal battle to bring justice for the death of Darelle Yancey. In July 2021, a trial date for Davis was scheduled for September of that year.
