In the late afternoon of November 26, 2018, Tiron Tydie Dansbury, a 37-year-old Black transgender woman, was found with gunshot wounds in Baltimore, Maryland. The discovery was made at approximately 5 p.m. in the 1900 block of Lanvale Street. Emergency services responded to the scene and transported Dansbury to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in grave condition.
Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries two days later, on November 28, 2018.
Initial reports surrounding the circumstances of Dansbury's death contained some conflicting information. Some early accounts stated the shooting occurred in the early morning hours in the 2400 block of Guilford Avenue following an argument, with the perpetrator fleeing in a dark-colored vehicle. However, these details were later corrected by police, who clarified that the information about the fleeing vehicle was related to an older, separate case.
The Baltimore Police Department's homicide unit opened an investigation into Dansbury's death. In the immediate aftermath, investigators had no leads on a potential suspect or a motive for the shooting. The police department's LGBTQ liaison was in contact with detectives working on the case, and a reward of $4,000 was offered for any information that would lead to an arrest. The Baltimore Transgender Alliance held a community vigil on November 30, 2018, to honor Dansbury's memory and provide a space for the community to grieve.
