On a cold December evening in Baltimore, the lives of two sisters were tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. Twenty-one-year-old Leah N. Jeter, a Black female, was with her older sister, Kamira, on December 20, 2020, when violence erupted at the intersection of Old Frederick Road and South Kossuth Street. Responding to reports of a shooting shortly before 8:30 p.m., police arrived to a grim scene.
A gray Honda Accord was stopped at the intersection, and next to the driver's side, Leah lay on the ground, having been shot seven times. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Inside the car, in the passenger seat, her sister Kamira was found with three gunshot wounds. Rushed to a nearby trauma center, she would also succumb to her injuries.
The investigation into the double homicide soon focused on Deamonte Spencer, a man known as "Sconey," who was romantically involved with Kamira. A pivotal piece of evidence came from surveillance footage that, while not capturing video, recorded the chilling final moments of the sisters' lives. On the audio, a woman's voice, identified as Leah's, could be heard screaming, "Sconey!? You shot her...are you serious Sconey!?" This desperate cry was followed by the sound of more gunshots. This audio, along with cell phone data that placed Spencer at the location of the shooting and his DNA found inside the vehicle, built a strong case against him.
On July 1, 2021, authorities arrested the then 28-year-old Deamonte Spencer. He was charged with two counts of first and second-degree murder, in addition to assault and various weapons offenses. The case proceeded to trial, where prosecutors presented the powerful audio evidence of Leah's last words, arguing that she had identified her killer in the moments before her own death. In September 2023, a jury found Spencer guilty of all charges related to the murders of both Leah and Kamira Jeter. Following his conviction, in January 2024, Deamonte Spencer was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences, plus an additional 45 years in prison, ensuring he would be held accountable for the devastating loss of two young lives.
