In the quiet neighborhood of Perry Hall, Maryland, a sense of unease settled on the night of February 26, 2019. Responding to reports of gunshots, Baltimore County Police discovered a grim scene on Hickory Falls Way. Inside a running GMC Acadia, 20-year-old Taylor India Webb, a female resident of northeast Baltimore, was found in the driver's seat with multiple gunshot wounds to her upper body. She was pronounced dead at the scene, approximately ten miles from her home. The nature of the crime suggested a targeted attack, as there were no signs of robbery or a random act of violence.
The investigation into Taylor's death quickly focused on her ex-boyfriend, 19-year-old Christopher James Engles. Friends and family described their relationship as dysfunctional. Investigators uncovered text messages Taylor had sent to an acquaintance on the night of her murder, expressing fear as she went to meet Engles. In a chilling message, she shared her location, stating it was 'in case he try to kill me or set me up.' Further texts indicated that Engles was approaching her vehicle and ensuring she was alone. Cell phone records contradicted Engles' initial claim that he had not left his residence, placing him in the vicinity of the murder at the time it occurred. A photograph of Engles holding a. 38 caliber revolver, the same type of weapon used in the shooting, was also discovered.
Based on the compelling evidence, Christopher James Engles was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. During questioning, his account of his interactions with Taylor on the night of her death was inconsistent with phone records. Following his arrest, Engles was held without bond at the Baltimore County Detention Center. In September 2021, a jury convicted him of first-degree premeditated murder, robbery with a dangerous and deadly weapon, and use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence. The prosecution sought a sentence of life without the possibility of parole. Subsequently, in March 2022, Engles was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his former girlfriend.
