On a Wednesday night in April 2019, the life of 21-year-old Kevon Dix, a promising Black male Morgan State University student, was tragically cut short. The incident occurred around 10:23 p.m. in the 3400 block of Mary Avenue in Northeast Baltimore. Dix was leaving a friend's apartment and had just gotten into his car when he was fatally shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another man, aged 29, also suffered a gunshot wound to the leg in the same incident.
Dix was a music major with dreams of a future on Broadway or a career giving voice lessons. He was an active and enthusiastic member of the Morgan State University Choir and was set to graduate in December of that year. Alongside his studies, he worked as a toll collector for the Maryland Department of Transportation. His family and friends remembered him as a source of sunshine and a person who brought smiles to everyone he met. They believe his death may have been a case of mistaken identity, as nothing was stolen from his vehicle, including his iPhone and laptop.
In the wake of his death, the Morgan State University community mourned the loss of a vibrant member of their family. A vigil was held on campus, and the university's spring choir concert was dedicated to his memory. In a poignant ceremony in May 2019, Dix was posthumously awarded his Bachelor of Arts in Music. His brother, who had been accepted to the university on the same day his brother was killed, accepted the diploma on his behalf.
Despite the profound loss and the family's public pleas for justice, Kevon Dix's murder remains unsolved. As of early 2020, nearly a year after the shooting, Baltimore City Police were still actively investigating the case and seeking information from the public. To date, no arrests have been announced, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with his death, leaving a painful void for his loved ones and the community.
