On a Sunday evening in West Baltimore, a community cookout turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy. Derrell Briscoe, a 28-year-old male, was among the crowd gathered in the 2500 block of Edmondson Avenue on April 28, 2019, when the sound of gunfire shattered the peaceful atmosphere.
According to Baltimore Police, a Black male suspect approached the intersection and began firing indiscriminately into the crowd of people.
The gunman's shots struck multiple individuals, causing widespread panic. In the midst of the mayhem, Derrell Briscoe was fatally wounded. He tragically collapsed behind a nearby church and succumbed to his injuries.
The violent outburst left a devastating toll, with six other people suffering from gunshot wounds. The injured included a 30-year-old woman and five men, ranging in age from 27 to 58. They were all transported to area hospitals with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The lone shooter fled the scene and has not been apprehended. Investigators believe there may have been a second individual who fired back at the initial shooter, though this has not been definitively confirmed.
