On a summer night in Baltimore, Maryland, what began as a planned drug transaction turned into a fatal robbery, ending the life of 22-year-old Jaquan Johnson on July 15, 2019. Johnson and a friend had arranged to sell Xanax bars to two individuals on the 2900 block of Pulaski Highway. However, the encounter quickly escalated into a robbery. Johnson was shot twice during the incident and was later found by Baltimore Police Department officers on the 200 block of North Linwood Avenue, suffering
from gunshot wounds to the torso. He succumbed to his injuries, and his death was ruled a homicide.
The investigation into Jaquan Johnson’s murder led police to identify two suspects: Aaron Michael Clubb and his co-defendant, Tywon Johnson. Investigators utilized video surveillance footage which captured Clubb, Tywon Johnson, and a third individual heading toward the location of the shooting prior to the incident. A crucial piece of evidence was a trail of blood, later identified as Clubb's, which led police to a pill bottle. Clubb was located on the 2900 block of East Fayette Street with a gunshot wound to his left knee and was initially considered another victim before surveillance footage implicated him as a suspect.
Aaron Michael Clubb, who was 26 at the time of his trial, faced multiple charges including first-degree murder, conspiracy to first-degree murder, armed robbery, and weapons charges. Prosecutors argued that Clubb had planned to rob Jaquan Johnson from the outset. During the trial, it was revealed that although Johnson was armed, only one gun was fired at the scene, with five shell casings and two projectiles recovered. In May 2023, a jury found Clubb guilty of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, and illegal possession of a firearm. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison plus five years on December 5, 2023.
The second suspect, Tywon Johnson, faces similar charges, including an additional count of first-degree murder. He is expected to be tried separately from Clubb. As of early May 2023, a court warrant had been issued for his arrest, and a trial date had not yet been scheduled.
