On the evening of August 17, 2019, in Baltimore, Maryland, a young man named Evan Brewington, aged 19, was fatally shot. The incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. on the 700 block of Whitmore Avenue. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Brewington lying in a pool of his own blood. An autopsy later revealed that he had sustained six gunshot wounds to various parts of his body, including his chin, chest, abdomen, shoulder, forearm, and knee. His death was officially ruled a homicide.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of 20-year-old Tyrek Hodge, who was identified as a friend of Brewington. Hodge was charged with first-degree murder, firearm use in a violent crime, and several other weapons charges. Prosecutors alleged that on the night of the murder, Hodge and Brewington were together in a car with another friend when an argument broke out between them. The two then reportedly exited the vehicle and engaged in a physical altercation, which escalated to the fatal shooting. It was also alleged that Hodge set a stolen car on fire later that same night on the 2200 block of W. Lanvale Street in an attempt to destroy evidence connected to the murder.
During the trial, which commenced on July 29, 2021, the prosecution presented its case, calling upon various witnesses, including the first responding officer and a witness who was reportedly present during the incident. This witness testified to hearing a gunshot and then fleeing as more shots were fired. However, the defense attorney highlighted inconsistencies between this witness's trial testimony and their initial interview with the Baltimore Police Department. Despite the charges and the evidence presented by the prosecution, the jury ultimately acquitted Tyrek Hodge of all charges related to the death of Evan Brewington.
