In the pre-dawn hours of September 18, 2019, the life of 34-year-old Donte Ridgeley Butler was tragically cut short on a street in Northwest Baltimore. A hail of bullets shattered the early morning quiet in the 3400 block of Piedmont Avenue, and when police responded to reports of gunfire around 1:45 a.m., they found Butler suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Paramedics rushed him to Sinai Hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
Donte Butler, a man born in Towson, Maryland, on August 7, 1985, had grown up in the Gwynn Oak community. His sudden and violent death left a profound void in the lives of his family and friends. Five days after the shooting, on September 23, 2019, those who knew and loved him gathered at Vaughn C. Greene Funeral Services in Randallstown to mourn their loss and share memories of the man they had lost. The following day, a celebration of his life was held at the New Antioch Baptist Church, also in Randallstown, before he was laid to rest at King Memorial Park in Windsor Mill.
In the wake of the homicide, the Baltimore Police Department opened an investigation into Butler's death. Detectives began the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to the fatal shooting, appealing to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case.
