In the early morning hours of November 14, 2019, the life of 21-year-old Courtney Richardson, a Black male, was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire on the 1900 block of McHenry Street in Baltimore, Maryland. Another individual, Aryanna James, was also killed in the attack. The violence erupted at approximately 2:50 a.m., when a ShotSpotter alert notified police of 10 rounds discharged in the area.
Responding officers discovered a grim scene, finding Richardson and James both suffering from gunshot wounds. While James was pronounced dead at the scene, Richardson was rushed to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The investigation that followed uncovered a night of terror orchestrated by three young men: Malik Brooks, Kiray Walker, and Devon Bynum. Their crime spree, which unfolded between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m., included multiple armed robberies and two stolen cars, culminating in the fatal shooting of Richardson and James. Surveillance footage captured a small gray sedan pulling onto a side street near the scene of the crime. Three individuals were seen exiting the vehicle and heading towards McHenry Street. Moments later, two of these individuals opened fire on Richardson and James.
The evidence compiled by law enforcement, including ballistics from seven 9mm casings and two. 40 caliber casings found at the scene, led to the arrests of Brooks, Walker, and Bynum. The trio faced a host of charges, including first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. During the subsequent legal proceedings, the prosecution presented a case built on circumstantial evidence, highlighting the defendants' violent actions throughout the night.
Ultimately, the wheels of justice turned, delivering convictions for those responsible for the senseless deaths. Kiray Walker and Malik Brooks were found guilty on dozens of charges related to the double homicide. Devon Bynum, who was a minor at the time of the killings, pleaded guilty to his involvement. For his role in the murders, Malik Brooks received a sentence of two consecutive life sentences plus 205 years in prison, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life behind bars.
