On the evening of March 28, 2020, in the Pigtown neighborhood of South Baltimore, 27-year-old Anthony N. Covington, a Black male, was fatally shot in an incident that also left three other men wounded. The violence erupted at the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Ostend Street when a silver Infiniti sedan stopped at a red light. Three individuals exited the car and opened fire on a group of people standing on the corner.
Police were alerted to the shooting by a ShotSpotter
notification at approximately 9:39 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found Covington on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The three other victims of the shooting were also taken to the hospital and ultimately survived their injuries. The crime scene investigation yielded significant evidence, including numerous bullet fragments and spent shell casings.
The investigation into the quadruple shooting led authorities to identify Jeremiah Tehohney, then 23, as a primary suspect. Security camera footage from the area corroborated witness statements about the shooters exiting the silver Infiniti. Further evidence was gathered from social media, where Tehohney had posted images of himself in clothing that matched the description of one of the gunmen seen in the surveillance footage.
In October 2022, Jeremiah Tehohney was convicted of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and a related handgun offense. During his sentencing in February 2023, prosecutors highlighted his extensive criminal history and presented jail calls in which he seemed to refer to Covington's death as not being his 'first body.' Despite his defense attorney's arguments for a more lenient sentence, citing a difficult upbringing, the judge sentenced Tehohney to life in prison plus an additional three years.
