On the evening of June 2, 2020, a simple act of neighborliness turned tragic, leading to the death of 51-year-old Roderick Daniels in Baltimore, Maryland. Daniels, a U.S. Army Sergeant First Class, and another 35-year-old man were shot in the 5600 block of Haddon Avenue. The incident began when Daniels and his neighbor noticed that a female neighbor had left her keys in her apartment door.
As they knocked on her door to return them, a man, later identified as Shae-Von Edwards, approached them.
Edwards, who was reportedly the woman's boyfriend, confronted Daniels and his neighbor, questioning why they were at her door. Despite their explanation, an argument ensued, and Edwards produced a handgun and opened fire. Daniels was struck multiple times by the gunfire. Both men were transported to Sinai Hospital, where Daniels succumbed to his injuries. The second victim was treated for his wounds and survived.
The Baltimore Police Department's investigation quickly identified 21-year-old Shae-Von Edwards as the suspect, thanks to crucial information provided by witnesses. An arrest warrant was issued, and on June 20, 2020, Edwards was apprehended in Baltimore County by the Warrant Apprehension Task Force. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
In February 2023, following a four-day trial, a jury found Shae-von Edwards, then 24, guilty of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and three weapons charges. During the trial, prosecutors presented video surveillance footage that captured the initial confrontation. In April 2023, a judge sentenced Edwards to the maximum allowable for each charge, totaling 93 years in prison. The sentences are to be served consecutively. Family members of Roderick Daniels, who was remembered as a mentor and a respected member of the community, gave heartfelt statements at the sentencing.
