On the Fourth of July in 2020, a day typically marked by celebration, tragedy struck in Temple Hills, Maryland, ending the life of 24-year-old John Dennis Watts V of Baltimore. He was a Black/African American male. The evening was shattered by gunfire around 9:30 p.m. in the 4600 block of Dallas Place. When Prince George's County police officers arrived at the scene, they found Watts suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency services transported him to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. The violence of that night was not limited to Watts; three other individuals were also shot during the incident. Fortunately, their injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening.
In the ensuing investigation, detectives from the Homicide Unit began to piece together the events of that evening.
Preliminary findings from the police suggested that the shooting was not a random act of violence and that Watts may have been specifically targeted.
