In the late evening hours of August 22, 2020, the life of 32-year-old Dyante Lee Battle, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in Lexington Park, Maryland. His body was discovered in a wooded area situated between a Wendy's parking lot and North Essex Drive after police responded to reports of shots fired in the vicinity. An autopsy would later confirm that Battle had been shot five times, with shell casings of three different calibers found at the scene, suggesting the
harrowing final moments of his life.
The investigation into the homicide, a collaborative effort between the Maryland State Police and the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office, quickly honed in on a suspect. Within a few hours of the murder, a witness came forward to report that 18-year-old Malachi Aaron Banks had confessed to the shooting. This critical lead was substantiated by video surveillance footage that captured Banks admitting to the crime on the front porch of a residence. He had reportedly asked the witness for assistance in getting rid of the firearm used in the killing. Following a brief foot pursuit, law enforcement apprehended Banks.
Initially, investigators believed that others might have been involved in the murder, and the motive remained unclear. Evidence suggested that as many as five individuals fled the scene. However, the investigation ultimately centered on Banks. In a significant development, on July 2, 2021, Malachi Aaron Banks, then 19, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in connection with the death of Dyante Lee Battle.
