In the early evening of December 18, 2020, tragedy struck in a Landover, Maryland neighborhood, leaving a family and community in mourning. On that Friday, at approximately 5:40 p.m., 63-year-old Clifford Ellis was found in the driveway of his home on the 500 block of Pacer Drive, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. Despite the quick response of patrol officers, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The male victim, whose life was abruptly cut short, became the focus of an intense investigation by the Prince George's County Police Department.
The events that unfolded in the moments surrounding the shooting painted a chaotic and violent picture. The preliminary investigation revealed that after shooting Ellis, the assailant stole the victim's pickup truck. This was just the beginning of a crime spree that continued in the immediate aftermath of the murder. The suspect went on to attempt the theft of several other vehicles, and in a further display of brazen criminality, broke into one home and attempted to force his way into a second. Fortunately, no one else was physically harmed during these subsequent acts.
Within an hour of the initial shooting, at approximately 6:30 p.m., law enforcement officers located and apprehended a suspect in the Capital Heights area, on the 1000 block of Glacier Avenue. The individual taken into custody was identified as 31-year-old Robert Hill, a resident of the 7700 block of Willow Hill Drive in Landover. The swift arrest brought a sense of relief to the terrified community, though the motive for the senseless violence remained a troubling question.
Following his arrest, Robert Hill was charged with a litany of serious offenses, including first and second-degree murder, robbery, armed carjacking, and home invasion. A court commissioner ordered that he be held at the Department of Corrections without bond. The charges reflected the brutal nature of the crime and the string of offenses that followed, indicating the severity of the case that would proceed through the justice system.
