In the fading daylight of a December evening in Baltimore, Maryland, the life of Derrick Lamont Smith, a 36-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short. On December 17, 2021, gunfire erupted in the 1300 block of West North Avenue, leaving multiple people wounded. Responding to a ShotSpotter alert at approximately 7:49 p.m., police officers discovered a chaotic scene with five individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.
