In the warm evening of June 4, 2023, the life of 19-year-old K’mauri Ebanks was tragically cut short in a hail of gunfire in the Seton Hill neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. A senior and the starting quarterback for the Digital Harbor High School football team, Ebanks was just days away from his high school graduation. That Sunday, he had been at a baby shower with his pregnant girlfriend, filled with the anticipation of becoming a father to a baby girl they planned to name Amora.
Later that evening, at approximately 8:39 p.m., police were called to the 500 block of Orchard Street where they found Ebanks suffering from multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds. He had reportedly been carrying gifts from the baby shower when he was shot at least 35 times. Medics rushed him to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
K'mauri, a Black male born on November 5, 2003, was remembered by his football coach as a good student of the game, whose ability to memorize plays helped him excel in the quarterback position. His coach also noted a decline in his school attendance after the football season. He was a beloved son, brother, and grandson, who was excited about the new chapter of fatherhood. In the wake of his death, he was awarded an honorary diploma from his high school.
As of now, the investigation into K’mauri Ebanks's murder is ongoing. Homicide detectives are leading the case, but no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made. The Baltimore Police Department has urged anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
