In the early morning hours of June 15, 2022, Curtis Lee Jones Jr., a 33-year-old man, was fatally shot in Baltimore, Maryland. The incident occurred at a Marathon Gas Station on West Mulberry Street. Jones was discovered unresponsive in the driver's seat of a Toyota Avalon with a gunshot wound to his neck. Despite being transported to a shock trauma center, he was pronounced deceased at 4:14 a.m.
Surveillance footage from the gas station captured the events leading up to the shooting.
Jones and a companion arrived at the gas station at 3:36 a.m. and went inside the store. A short time later, the suspect, later identified as Darryon Edwin Cephas, was seen on the premises. There appeared to be no interaction between Jones and Cephas inside the store. After Jones and his companion returned to their vehicle, Cephas was seen on the footage retrieving a handgun from a backpack. He then approached the vehicle and fired into the driver-side window, striking Jones in the neck before fleeing the scene.
Following an investigation, police identified 23-year-old Darryon Edwin Cephas as the suspect. He was arrested on July 8, 2022, and charged with first-degree murder and other offenses. While the motive for the shooting remains unclear, Cephas was convicted for the murder of Curtis Jones. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years.
