In the early morning hours of June 18, 2022, a sense of stillness was broken in a Riverdale, Maryland neighborhood. It was there, on the 5400 block of Powhatan Road, that 20-year-old Arnold Javier Nuñez Alfaro was found inside his vehicle at approximately 1:35 a.m. He had sustained gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Alfaro, a resident of Riverdale, was of Hispanic ethnicity.
The tragic discovery launched a homicide investigation by the Prince George's County Police
Department. As detectives began to piece together the events leading to his death, a public appeal for information was made. A substantial reward of up to $25,000 was offered for any information that could lead to an arrest and conviction in the case. In the wake of his death, loved ones of Nuñez Alfaro organized a GoFundMe campaign to help with the considerable expense of returning his body to his native Honduras, a testament to the deep ties he maintained with his homeland.
Despite the ongoing investigation and the financial incentive for tips, the case has grown cold. To date, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects in the fatal shooting of Arnold Javier Nuñez Alfaro. No arrests have been made, and the circumstances surrounding his death remain an unsolved mystery. The community is left with questions and the hope that justice will one day be served for the young man whose life was cut short. The Prince George's County Police Department continues to encourage anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward.
