In the early hours of July 9, 2022, violence erupted on the 2500 block of West Fairmount Avenue in Baltimore, forever altering the course of a young man's life. James McDougald III, a 33-year-old Black male, was found by police responding to a ShotSpotter alert and a call for a shooting at approximately 12:34 a.m.. He was suffering from numerous life-threatening gunshot wounds and was unresponsive at the scene.
Alongside McDougald, another man, aged 40, was also discovered with multiple
gunshot wounds. Both men were immediately transported to a local hospital for medical attention. While the older victim's injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening, McDougald's condition was gravely serious. He sustained life-altering injuries that would set him on a long and arduous path.
For more than a year and a half, James McDougald III fought for his life. However, the severe complications stemming from the shooting ultimately proved insurmountable. On February 9, 2024, at the age of 34, he succumbed to his injuries. Following an autopsy, the Medical Examiner's Office officially ruled his death a homicide, a grim conclusion to a tragedy that began nineteen months prior.
As of now, public information regarding any arrests or identified suspects in the shooting of James McDougald III has not been released. The investigation into his death remains ongoing as authorities continue to seek answers and justice for the fatal shooting that claimed his life.
