In the summer of 2022, a tragedy unfolded in Northeast Baltimore that cut short the life of a young father. On the night of July 26th, police were called to the 3200 block of Fenwick Avenue for a reported shooting. There, they found 33-year-old Ernest Jackson IV, a Black male, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced deceased.
The investigation into the death of Ernest, known to his loved ones
as 'EJ,' moved swiftly. Less than two weeks later, on August 4th, an arrest was made in connection with the fatal shooting. Baltimore Police took 20-year-old Rakim Muhammad, Jr. into custody. He was subsequently charged with first and second-degree murder for his alleged role in the death of Ernest Jackson. The motive for the shooting was not immediately made public by the authorities.
The legal proceedings that followed brought a measure of closure to Ernest Jackson's grieving family. In March of 2024, Rakim Muhammad pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. During the sentencing hearing, Ernest's mother and his partner gave emotional testimony about the profound loss they and their children experienced. His mother shared that all she had left of her son were pictures, and his partner spoke of the difficulty of explaining his absence to their young children. Muhammad's defense attorney stated that his client's actions were out of character and attributed them to untreated mental health issues, including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Ultimately, a judge sentenced Rakim Muhammad to a lengthy prison term for the murder of Ernest Jackson IV.
