In the spring of 2025, with his high school graduation just two weeks away, 18-year-old Demetrius 'Meechie' Phyall's life was tragically cut short on the streets of Baltimore, Maryland. A Black male with his future ahead of him, Phyall was a student at Overlea High School and worked as a community aid and lifeguard for Baltimore City Recreation and Parks.
His death left his family and community grappling with the sudden and violent loss of a young life on the cusp of a significant milestone.
On the evening of May 19, 2025, at approximately 5:40 p.m., the sound of gunshots echoed in the Eastern District of the city. Baltimore Police officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of North Montford Avenue, in the McElderry Park neighborhood, following several ShotSpotter alerts. Upon their arrival, they discovered Phyall suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics arrived on the scene and quickly transported him to a nearby hospital in an effort to save his life. Despite their efforts, Demetrius Phyall was pronounced deceased by hospital staff.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Baltimore Police Department's Homicide Unit took charge of the investigation. Authorities appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the apprehension of the person or persons responsible for Phyall's death. They encouraged anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact homicide detectives or to provide anonymous tips through the Metro Crime Stoppers hotline. To date, there has been no public announcement regarding any arrests made in connection with the murder of Demetrius Phyall, and no suspects have been officially named. The investigation into his death remains ongoing as his loved ones continue to seek justice and answers in the wake of their profound loss.
