On an evening in August, the community of Lexington Park, Maryland, was shaken by an act of violence that claimed the life of 53-year-old Anthony Charles Wright. On August 9, 2022, at approximately 5:52 p.m., deputies from the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the 21600 block of Great Mills Road following reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, deputies discovered Wright in the parking lot behind a laundromat, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
First responders immediately began life-saving measures, and Wright was rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect. Within minutes of the initial call, law enforcement had identified 46-year-old Malcolm Carl Young of Forestville as the individual responsible for the fatal shooting. Witnesses at the scene identified Young as the shooter and indicated that he had fled towards a nearby shopping center. He was swiftly taken into custody by responding officers.
Following his arrest, Young was transported to the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center. He was subsequently charged with first and second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault, and several firearms offenses, including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
In August 2023, a St. Mary's County jury convicted Malcolm Carl Young of second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence. In February 2024, he was sentenced to 60 years in prison, with 30 years of active incarceration. The sentencing included 40 years for the murder, with 30 years to be actively served, and a concurrent 20-year sentence for the firearm charge.
