In the afternoon hours of December 7, 2022, a burst of gunfire shattered the relative quiet of a Northwest Baltimore neighborhood, leaving a young man's life cut tragically short. Twenty-year-old Amare Burruss, a Black male, was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the head in the 4200 block of Pimlico Road. Rushed to a nearby hospital, he was pronounced deceased, becoming another victim of the city's pervasive gun violence.
The events that led to his death, as pieced together by investigators, began with a prior shooting in the rear parking lot of the 4400 block of Park Heights Avenue. Burruss had reportedly fired a weapon at an associate of three other men, who then got into a dark gray Acura TL in pursuit of retribution.
The subsequent investigation by the Baltimore Police Department moved swiftly. By February of the following year, authorities had identified and apprehended three suspects in connection with the fatal drive-by shooting. On February 14, 2023, members of the Warrant Task Force arrested 22-year-old Wesley Lambert in a parking lot in the 4400 block of Park Heights Avenue. The second suspect, 23-year-old Darrean Fleming, was taken into custody without incident on February 22 in the 2800 block of Rosalind Avenue. The final suspect, Garry Lee Morris, was arrested the very next day in the 800 block of Clintwood Court. All three men were charged with first-degree murder and firearm offenses for their roles in the death of Amare Burruss.
The legal process that followed brought a measure of justice for Burruss's grieving family. Each of the three co-defendants faced trial for their involvement in the calculated act of retaliatory violence. The trials revealed that Fleming was the driver of the Acura, with Morris in the front passenger seat and Lambert in the back. Following their separate legal battles, Darrean Fleming and Wesley Lambert were both found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. In September 2025, Garry Morris, the last of the three, was also sentenced to life for first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. During Morris's sentencing, the victim's mother delivered a heart-wrenching impact statement, describing the profound and enduring pain of losing her son, a sentiment that underscored the devastating ripple effects of a single violent act.
