Willie Edward Peeples, a 30-year-old South Carolina Highway Patrolman, tragically lost his life on June 8, 1979, in Walterboro, South Carolina. Peeples was involved in a high-speed pursuit of a motorcyclist on I-95 near Walterboro. The pursuit ended when the motorcyclist was forced to stop at the intersection of SC 61 and US 15 due to a problem with his motorcycle.
