Patrolman Steven B. Hiott, a 21-year-old officer with the Charleston County Police Department, tragically lost his life on October 29, 1982, in North Charleston, South Carolina. During a routine traffic stop, a struggle ensued between Hiott, his partner, and the suspect. The suspect managed to gain control of Hiott's partner's weapon, subsequently shooting and killing Hiott.
