The stillness of the early morning hours on July 7, 2023, was broken when North Charleston Police Department officers received reports regarding a disturbance at a residence on Waldheim Street. Upon arriving at the scene at approximately 1:45 a.m., authorities entered the home and discovered a 30-year-old Hispanic male named Moises Diaz Morales suffering from a critical injury.
Officers found that he had sustained a single gunshot wound, prompting an immediate response from emergency medical personnel who attempted to render aid to the victim.
Despite the rapid intervention of first responders, the severity of the wound proved fatal. Medical efforts to save his life were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:57 a.m., just minutes after help arrived. The Charleston County Coroner’s Office subsequently responded to the location to formally identify the victim and confirm the cause of death, ruling the incident a homicide. The violent nature of the event left the local community and the victim's loved ones grappling with the sudden loss.
Following the shooting, detectives launched a comprehensive homicide investigation to determine the circumstances leading up to the gunfire. As the inquiry progressed, law enforcement officials worked to uncover leads, yet public reports indicated that no suspects had been identified and no arrests had been made in connection with the killing.
