Charles Griffeth, aged 56, was tragically killed on September 15, 1997, in Aiken, South Carolina. His death occurred during a mass shooting at the R.E. Phelon Company, a lawn mower parts manufacturing factory where he was employed. The perpetrator, Hastings Arthur Wise, was a former employee of the factory who had been terminated from his position as a machine operator in July 1997. Wise's dismissal followed a confrontation with a supervisor, which he believed was racially motivated.
