David Nelson Hammer Jr., a 21-year-old male, tragically lost his life on Saturday, March 22, 2014, in Fort Mill, South Carolina. The fatal incident unfolded in the driveway of a residence on Fort Mill Highway, forever altering the lives of those involved.
An encounter between Hammer and 57-year-old Douglas Jowers of Indian Land culminated in Jowers firing a single, fatal shot. In the investigation that followed, Jowers asserted that he acted in self-defense, stating that he feared for his life. He described Hammer as behaving aggressively and appearing intoxicated, which, combined with Jowers' recent surgery, made him feel exceptionally vulnerable during the confrontation.
After a thorough investigation, the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office and the 6th Circuit Solicitor's Office determined that Jowers' actions were justified under South Carolina's 'Stand Your Ground' law. This legal principle allows for the use of deadly force when an individual has a reasonable belief that it is necessary to prevent their own death or serious bodily harm. As a result of this determination, no charges were filed against Douglas Jowers. In the aftermath, Jowers conveyed his sympathies to the family of David Nelson Hammer Jr.
