In the quiet town of Fort Mill, South Carolina, the lives of 40-year-old Barry Alan Reynolds and his mother, Betty Jane “BJ” Reynolds, 71, were brought to a violent and tragic end on the night of September 27, 2022. The two were found shot to death in their home on Saddle Ridge Road, a crime that shocked their affluent neighborhood. The ensuing investigation
led to the arrest of Paul Eugene Bumgardner, then 45, from Gastonia, North Carolina, approximately ten days after the murders. He was charged with two counts of murder, first-degree burglary, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Prosecutors built a case around the claim that Bumgardner had tracked his estranged wife to Barry Reynolds's home. It was revealed during the trial that Reynolds had a child with Bumgardner's wife over a decade prior, and the two had recently rekindled their relationship. Investigators alleged that Bumgardner, aware of this renewed connection, went to the Reynolds' residence, where the fatal encounter occurred. A 911 call was made by Bumgardner's wife, who was on the phone with Barry Reynolds when he went to answer a knock at the door. She reported hearing someone say they had a package for Barry, followed by a scuffle and Reynolds screaming her name.
The trial of Paul Eugene Bumgardner commenced in April 2024. The prosecution presented evidence that included DNA found on a hat and mask at the crime scene, which they claimed matched Bumgardner's. They also highlighted his use of GPS to track his wife's movements to the Reynolds' home. However, Bumgardner pleaded not guilty to all charges.
