In the early morning hours of April 28, 2017, the life of 37-year-old Tavaris Brummette was tragically cut short in his hometown of Benton Harbor, Michigan. Brummette, a Black male known affectionately to friends as 'Gator,' was discovered with severe gunshot wounds at the Heyward Wells apartment complex. Emergency services arrived at the scene and transported him to Lakeland Hospital.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
Tavaris, who was born on July 20, 1980, was remembered by those in his community for his cheerful personality and his ability to bring laughter to others. Friends and neighbors expressed shock and sorrow following the incident, stating that he was a positive presence in their lives and had no known enemies. His untimely death left many in the community feeling uneasy and concerned about the violence that had touched their neighborhood. Brummette had a love for refurbishing homes and enjoyed spending his time with family and friends. He had previously been employed by several local companies, including Fabco, Harbor Light Metals, Bridgeman Plastics, and Tobain Metals.
The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety launched an investigation into the shooting, which remains open. To date, no suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide. Authorities have urged the public to come forward with any information that could lead to a breakthrough in the case. The lack of progress has been a source of ongoing frustration for Brummette's loved ones, who continue to await answers and seek justice for his death.
Tavaris Brummette left behind a large family to cherish his memory, including his wife, Dorian Brummette, his children, and a grandson. He was preceded in death by his mother, Deborah Ann Brummette. His family held a visitation and service for him at New Bethel Baptist Church in Benton Harbor.
