In the early evening hours of June 4, 2014, in Florence, South Carolina, 33-year-old Edward Windham was riding his moped through the Tara Village subdivision. As he approached the intersection of Candy and Leigh lanes, the sound of gunshots shattered the neighborhood's calm. When residents emerged from their homes, they were met with a tragic scene: Windham, slumped over his moped, had been fatally shot.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the death of the Florence man quickly led to the identification of two suspects, who were taken into custody shortly after the incident. The individuals arrested were brothers, 28-year-old Cory Nettles Allen and 29-year-old Frederick Allen, both from Manning. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing Cory Nettles Allen holding a pistol and standing over Windham's body immediately after the gunshots were heard. Authorities stated that Cory Allen made no attempt to flee the scene.
Following their arrests, Cory Nettles Allen was charged with murder, while his brother, Frederick Allen, faced charges of accessory before the fact to murder. In a court appearance on June 9, 2014, both brothers were denied bond and were ordered to remain at the Florence County Detention Center pending their first appearance in the Florence County General Sessions Court, which was scheduled for August 20, 2014. Law enforcement did not release a motive for the shooting.
