In the late summer of 2014, a tragic and violent series of events unfolded in Greenville, South Carolina, resulting in the death of 65-year-old Bobby Wayne Wood. A U.S. Marine veteran of the Vietnam War, Wood was working as a security guard at the John D. Hollingsworth on Wheels textile factory, a place where he had been a dedicated employee for 47 years.
On the morning of Friday, August 29, 2014, the lives of Wood and his colleague, 53-year-old Richard Thomas Ellison, were senselessly
cut short. A 23-year-old man named Evan Casey Bennett, who had reportedly been seen observing the security guards at the factory, carried out what authorities would later describe as a 'senseless thrill killing.' Bennett shot and killed both Wood and Ellison on the factory premises. In the immediate aftermath, the perpetrator remained unidentified, leaving a community in fear and law enforcement with a complex investigation.
The crime spree did not end there. A few days later, on Monday, the situation escalated dramatically. Bennett was confronted by his 58-year-old stepfather, Gregory Jones, at their family home regarding the murders of the security guards. In response, Bennett fatally shot his stepfather. Shortly after, armed with a shotgun and wearing a tactical vest, Bennett drove to the Greenville County Law Enforcement Center. There, he opened fire, shattering windows and wounding a police officer before ultimately taking his own life in the parking lot.
The investigation concluded that Evan Casey Bennett was the sole individual responsible for the three murders and the wounding of the police officer. With Bennett's death, any potential for a trial or further legal proceedings came to a close. Bobby Wayne Wood was remembered as a devoted family man, survived by four daughters and seven grandchildren.
