In the late hours of a September evening in 2014, a life was tragically cut short in the parking lot of a North Charleston nightclub. Barrett L. Kinlock, a 30-year-old Black male, was outside the Big Rock Club on Kimbell Road when he was fatally shot multiple times on September 13, 2014. The sudden violence left his family and the community in a state of shock and mourning.
A celebration of his life was held a week later as those who knew him grappled with the senseless loss.
The investigation into Kinlock's death moved forward, and Charleston County detectives were able to identify a suspect in the shooting. An arrest was made, and charges were brought against the individual believed to be responsible for Kinlock's death. The legal proceedings that followed were marked by moments of high tension and disrespect. During a court appearance, the suspect reportedly laughed at the charges laid against him and was so disruptive that he was removed from the bond hearing on two separate occasions, adding to the distress of the victim's grieving family.
