In the fall of 2014, a long-standing dispute in Liberty, South Carolina, culminated in a tragic outburst of violence that left two family members dead. On the afternoon of October 10th, police received a 911 call reporting a shooting at the Forestview Apartments. When officers arrived, they found a chaotic scene with civilians attempting to render aid to three men suffering from gunshot wounds in the parking lot and on a sidewalk.
Twenty-two-year-old Houston Chapman, a male, was pronounced dead at the scene. His uncle, 42-year-old Steven Chapman, was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation that followed painted a grim picture of a feud that had been simmering for months between Houston Chapman and another man, Benjamin James Pilgrim. Pilgrim, who was 32 at the time, was engaged to a member of the Chapman family and resided in the same apartment complex. Authorities believe that on that Friday afternoon, the ongoing animosity between the two men finally boiled over.
According to arrest warrants, Pilgrim went to the apartment where the confrontation occurred armed with a pistol and shot Houston Chapman multiple times. Investigators determined that Houston Chapman had returned fire, and in the exchange, his uncle Steven was struck. Despite this, authorities charged Pilgrim with murder in both deaths, alleging that his actions directly caused the fatal outcome for both men. Pilgrim himself sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the shootout and was airlifted to a hospital for treatment.
Following his release from a rehabilitation center, Benjamin James Pilgrim was arrested and charged with two counts of murder and one count of possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
